Central Oregon Sleigh RideWelcome…this is the sign above the entrance to Sunriver Stables and I felt just that. Upon my arrival the young lady, doing maintenance work was very friendly and helpful of any questions I asked. When the owner, John showed up he was just as amicable. The other two guides who were also on site, were friendly and helpful in showing me the tack rooms and everyone seems to have a sense of humor.

While most people don’t think of guided trail rides on horseback I would recommend Sunriver Stables, which is less than a mile from the nature center. John Russel, the owner, provides a variety of options, not just guided trail rides. The trail rides and pony rides are offered year round, weather permitting. The pony rides are on the small Shetland ponies available and these little guys are great for ages 2-6 years.

There are also sleigh rides available from November 15 through the end of March. John does a good job at providing the required necessities for warmth, comfort and safety. The sleighs themselves are of elegant style and are definitely comfortable. I met Mike, one of the draft horses and his sweet disposition made me feel comfortable to have younger children around him and I think he may have wanted some of my elk jerky.

All trail and sleigh rides wander among the backwoods of Deschutes National Forest and along side the Deschutes River. From these rides you will see spectacular views of wildlife, Mt. Bachelor and the backside of Sunriver, known as Sunriver meadow.

The cost of the trail rides range from a ½ hour at $25 to 2 hours at $65. All pony rides are $10 unless of course you choose the little barrel guy that grazes by the front office. He doesn’t go far but sure is cute. The sleigh rides range in price from $85-$95, depending on wether it is holiday time or not.

Sunriver Stables also offers daily and weekly horse boarding as well. Reservations are required. John or Jackie Russel can be reached at their stable office by calling 541-593-6995. Open hours of operation are Tues-Sun, 10 AM to sundown. Reservations are required except for the pony rides. All major credit cards are accepted.

  1. Hi I found your blog via Google while searching for horse tack and your post regarding looks very interesting to me

  2. Horse Tack,

So glad you found us and enjoyed the article! Be sure to come back often as we’re never sitting still, always finding new and exciting things to do and write about!

  3. I am interested in taking my 2 daughters (18, 25) on all day rides. We are all intermediate riders capable of cantoring and looking for a ride that includes long cantors.

Can you accommodate us? what are your 2009 rates?

    Thanks,
    Jack Welch
